Family Man
(published by The Blue Collar Review, Spring, 2004)

Darkness again.
Electricity gone for another month.
They stumble up and down stairs,
fall over objects unseen.
Chancing blazes from dripping candles.
Darkness again.

Cold again.
White heat from wood stove
centered in one room.
Bellowing warmth paid for
by her painful physical hardship,
by his broken fortune.
Wood weighted.
Cold again.

Hungry again.
Unfed.
Excruciating void fills children
like a sink hole.
Canned nutrition vacates plates,
anxious in velocity.
Eating, attired in tattered tailoring.
Hungry again.

Friday again.
Paycheck slides onto
red, black, odd, even.
Trump card is calling.
Little left.
Equestrian payday.
Sport of kings.
Number four, second race.
Paycheck meltdown.
Friday again.
