I Hope You Understand

I wish it was a simple choice,
which you and I could make,
to share the quiet of this night,
to lie in love awake.

But nothing good is ever free,
though freedom's close at hand.
And if I could, I'd be with you.
I hope you understand.

So many miles from me to earth,
so many miles from you,
so much I want you there for me
after this journey's through.

You said you would be there for me
when this bird grabbed the land.
But freedom hasn't yet arrived.
I hope you understand.

There is a time, not far from now,
when what we have will be
an honest love which fills our lives,
for anyone to see.

But, tonight we must give in to
reality's demand
and hide our love within our hearts.
I hope you understand.
